“[It] invites everyone to be more accepting, especially of themselves”. - UVU Review

Disparate Threads,
Utah Valley University,
2025

Like many groups, the LGBTQIA+ community has members who practice religion. Despite this fact, religion and queer identity are often perceived as mutually exclusive. In reality, these two things are often experienced as coexisting aspects of a meaningful life.

Disparate Threads is a celebration of Queer Expressions of Faith. Gathered from wonderful queer Utahns with a variety of beliefs, these stories illustrate what it looks like to weave a Queer-Religious life.

In addition to interviews by queer-religious Utahns featured through video and fiber art, this installation features a rainbow forest with paths for audiences to wander through, as well as an interactive centerpiece that audiences are invited to weave “threads” (in the form of fabric strips, ribbons, and pipe cleaners) into.

It has been featured in different iterations at the Queer Spectra Arts Festival, Utah Valley University, and the Springville Museum of Fine Art’s Spiritual and Religious Show.

Disparate Threads was made possible by UVU’s Excellence and Innovation Initiative Grant.
